The Road

by Lucian Frank

The road rises up before me
curving away into the distance
The night is dark with few stars
and the lights of the city just a dull glow

No headlights break up the peace
with their glaring faces
I am alone out here
and that is fine with me

No company is wanted
on a night like this
The car is my only companion
her conversation is brilliant

I ease the pedal down
as we top a small rise
The sound of the engine
powerful and controlled is pure ecstasy

Racing through the night is all I need
real life slips away
For this one moment nothing exists
but the road the night and me
